DAVID THOMAS - BIOGRAPHYDavid Thomas is an artist currently based in Birmingham, United Kingdom, his work spans sculpture, performance, film and new medias, often working within an interdisciplinary capacity. David has exhibited extensively throughout the UK, USA and Japan. His work references social and cultural relationships and situations that exist both in and between countries and continents, analysing cultural identity and change. This work often references rapid globalisation and the increasing loss of cultural heritage social structures. The project You Are Here used an interactive web based interface to analyse the cultural and industrial differences and similarities between Tokyo, Japan and Birmingham, UK, this piece was subsequently exhibited at two venues spanning both the commercial and industrial areas of Tokyo city. Similarly in his project Ghost Town David used GPS technology and ‘Google Earth Hacks' to analyse York's obsession and reliance upon supposed ‘paranormal activity' as a tool for increased tourism and industry . David's video works such as Choreographed Violence and the Lost Narrative series often adopt tools and techniques used in film production and cinematography as a way of referencing mass society and contemporary moving image culture, whilst at the same time exploring the cultural and sociological differences between societies, and how a ‘generic cultural identity' is beginning to span geographic boarders. David works as a freelance project coordinator and curator, he is currently researching towards the implementation of a Media Arts Network spanning the West Midlands region of the UK. This follows from two international research trips funded by Arts Council England, for 15 artists and curators to attend both the Transmediale Festival in Berlin and the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, which David coordinated. © David Thomas 2006 |
